El Beaterio Guest
House is a charming hotel nested in the heart of the Colonial City of
Santo Domingo. this XVI century old convent has been faithfully restored
in keeping with the original charm and architecture of its period.
This quaint and
private hotel offers its guests an atmosphere of rest and tranquillity
together with the opportunity to enjoy the old time charm of this era. The
furniture, art and fittings has been carefully selected to compliment the
style of this period while classic music can be heard softly drifting
through the common living areas.
El Beaterio is a
colonial house from the beginning of the XVIth century, is located in the
heart of the majestic Santo Domingo colonial city, in front of a peaceful
park, close by the convent of the Dominicans.
Classified “World
Heritage Site” by UNESCO, the building was bequeathed to the foundation of
a "beaterio" by the widow Doña Maria of Araña before her departure for
Spain in 1556.
During centuries, a community of women who chose
to withdraw from the everyday life to follow a mystic and spiritual path
in a monastic atmosphere grew between those stony walls.
When, further to the
emergence of feminine religious orders, many of those women entered
convents, El Beaterio gradually became obsolete. Many years later, the
building received in its breast a private school which remained until the
80’s.
The El Beaterio colonial house was renovated at
the beginning of the new millennium to include all modern conveniences
without sacrificing its past colonial character.
All the rooms, oriented
toward a Spanish inner courtyard, present minimalist style decorations
which evoke the elegant austerity of their past.
Aperitif drinks can be
enjoyed in the living room or on the patio in the shade of tropical
greenery. Continental or American breakfast can be served under the
surroundings of the hundred year old arches of the dining rooms.

The terrace offers a panoramic view across the
roofs of the colonial city and on to the "Parque Duarte".
