ABREVIACIONES

ADA--Americans with Disabilities Act.

APIS--Advance Passenger Information System: the system whereby airlines transmit passengers¹ passport data obtained at check-in to the customs service at a gateway city for prelanding clearance.

ATPCO--Airline Tariff Publishing Company: the company that transmits fare data from an airline to CRS.

ARC--Airlines Reporting Corporation: the independent corporation owned by the airlines responsible for administering the agency ticket remittance program.

ATA--Air Transport Association: the Washington, D.C. & based trade association that represents the major U.S. and Canadian airlines.

AAA--American Automobile Association: the organization that provides its members with services relating to owning and operating automobiles, such as travel information, highway and legal services, and insurance. The AAA also operates as a full-service travel agency.

ABA--American Bus Association: the trade association representing intercity and charter bus companies.

AH&LA--
American Hotel and Lodging Association: the federation of lodging industry associations representing hotels in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America.

ASAE--American Society of Associations Executives: the organization of paid executives of national, state, and local trade, professional, technical, and business associations.

ASTA--American Society of Travel Agents: a trade association, the principal membership of which includes U.S. travel agencies with allied members drawn from travel suppliers, travel educators, and international affiliates.

ARTA--Association of Retail Travel Agents: the trade association of retail travel agents.

BART--Bay Area Rapid Transit.

CalSAE--California Society of Association Executives: membership of trade and professional associations and societies throughout California.

CalTrans--California Department of Transportation.

CABBI--California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns: statewide organization dedicated to the advancement of the bed & breakfast industry.

CalTIA--California Travel Industry Association: the voice and vision of the travel industry. Statewide association serving as a vehicle to provide a united voice in support of California¹s diverse travel industry.

CBA--California Bus Association.

CDP&R--California Department of Parks & Recreation: state entity providing for the health, inspiration, and education to Californians, preserving our biological diversity, protecting its natural and cultural resources, and creating opportunities for high-quality out-door recreation.

CHP--California Highway Patrol.

CH&LA--California Hotel & Lodging Association: statewide organization, serving the needs of California¹s lodging industry in governmental affairs, education and training, group buying programs, member¹s services, and public relations.

CLIA--California Lodging Industry Association: independent state trade association in California specializing in the needs of independent owner/operators of all types of lodging facilities.

CLIA--Cruise Lines International Association: the trade association of cruise lines that appoints travel agencies to sell cruises and receive commission on behalf of its member cruise lines.

CLM--California Land Management: outdoor recreation Management Company.

CMP--Certified Meeting Professional: the designation awarded to those who qualify by experience and expertise in the planning and execution of meetings.

CPC--The California Parks Company: Concessionaire operators serving the needs of park visitors, in partnership with local, state, and federal agencies.

CRA--California Restaurant Association: statewide trade association representing the restaurant and food service industry.

CRS--Computer Reservation System: an electronic system that links suppliers and distributors to a centralized database for the purpose of making reservations.

CSIA--California Ski Industry Association: nonprofit association representing the state¹s alpine and cross country resorts.

CSP--California State Parks.

CTC--Certified Travel Counselor: the designation awarded by the ICTA to travel professionals who complete an educational program and have five years of industry experience.

CTP--Certified Tour Professional: the designation awarded by the National Tour Association (NTA) to tour professionals with at least two years in the industry who complete an educational program with testing.

CTPA--California Travel Parks Association: representing the campground and RV industry.

CTTC--California Travel & Tourism Commission.

CVB¹s--Convention and Visitors Bureaus: primarily not-for-profit organizations that represent a specific destination such as a city or region. CVBs serve as the "official" contact point for their destination for meeting professionals, tour operators, and individual visitors.

CVTA--Central Valley Tourism Association: promotes California¹s central valley for tours and individual travel.

DOT--Department of Transportation: the U.S. agency established in 1966, headed by cabinet member that is charged with developing and implementing policies to improve and regulate domestic and international transportation facilities and organizations.

GPS--Global Positioning System: the use of satellites to provide automobile drivers with an accurate reading of their location. Installed in premium rental cars.

GTO--Government Tourist Office: the representatives of one country stationed in another to market the country¹s tourism and trade possibilities.

IATA--International Air Transportation Association; International Air Transport Association: the trade association of international airlines offering scheduled services.

JNTO--Japan National Tourism Organization: nonprofit government tourist promotion office, providing tourism information to those planning to visit Japan.

JTOA--Japanese Tour Operators Association: association of Japanese tour operators. Study and develop new tours, new destinations, and security of Japanese visitors to California and the US.

MPI--Meeting Planners International: the professional educational association for corporate and association meeting planners.

MPINCC--Meeting Professionals International, Northern California Chapter: meeting planners and suppliers devoted to increasing knowledge awareness of industry issues, and trends.

MCO--Miscellaneous Charges Order: an accountable document issued by an air or rail carrier or its agent requesting the issue of a ticket or provision of services to the person named in the order.

NBTA--National Business Travel Association: the trade association of people specializing in business travel.

NTA--National Tour Association: the trade association of operators and wholesalers specializing in tours within North America.

NTO--National Tourist Office: an office maintained by a foreign government to promote tourism and provide informational resources.

NTSB--National Transportation Safety Board: the autonomous government agency that develops safety standards for public transportation and investigates accidents.

OCTC--Orange County Tourism Council : develop travel and tourism throughout Orange County.

PNR--Passenger Name Record: the record stored in an airline¹s reservation system detailing reservation and passenger information.

PATA--Pacific Asia Travel Association: the trade association of Pacific nations dedicated to the promotion and education of its member countries.

PCMA--Professional Convention Management Association: the organization involved in meeting planning for the medical, engineering, scientific, and educational fields.

PTA--Prepaid ticket advice.

RFP--Request for Proposal: a corporation¹s request to an agency that indicates its business travel account is out for bid and the corporation wants the agency to purpose an arrangement.

SATW--Society of American Travel Writers: the professional association of writers, photographers, editors, broadcasters, and public relations representatives whose purpose is to serve the traveling public.

SGMP--Society of Government Meeting Professionals: a nonprofit professional organization of persons involved in planning government meetings, either on a full or part-time basis, and those individuals who supply services to government planners.

SITE--Society of Incentive Travel Executives: the association of travel managers specializing in incentive travel.

SKAL--A social organization of travel industry executives.

STAG--Society of Travel Agents in Government: the association of travel agents specializing in government travel.

STTE--Society of Travel and Tourism Educators: the nonprofit association of travel and tourism educators.

TIA--Travel Industry Association of America: the nonprofit organization representing components of the travel industry, coordinating efforts to encourage and to promote travel to and within the United States.

TTMA--Travel & Tourism Marketing Association: travel and tourism organization, providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information among professionals from the tourism industry.

USTOA--United States Tour Operators Association: the trade association of tour operators based in the United States and offering tours throughout the world.

VIA--The rail system of Canada.
