New Studies Show Incentive Travel
Booming!
According to a study released by the Incentive Federation at the
Motivation Show in Chicago, approximately $13.4 billion was spent on
incentive travel programs in one year. “The incentive industry is booming,”
said Frank Katusak, Incentive Federation Board Chairman. “What’s
particularly exciting about the results—besides the dollar figure—is that
incentive end user executives view incentives as an investment rather than a
cost because they can quickly and easily measure the financial return of
these initiatives.”
GFK, the fourth largest marketing research organization in the world. GFK
conducted telephone interviews with executives responsible for the
development and budgeting of incentive travel incentives. In total, 1,121
executives were interviewed.
Among the key findings:
* 20 percent of U.S. companies use travel incentives.
* Incentive travel is seen as an investment by 85 percent of companies with
revenues over $100 million.
* The average budget for travel incentives was $164,271.
* More than 75 percent of incentive travel end users spent between $100,000
and $500,000.
* More than half of large companies stated their budgets for incentive
travel have increased over the past two years and believe they will continue
to increase over the next two years, while almost one third say they have
remained the same.
Why should I offer a travel incentive instead of monetary incentives?
Studies show that monetary incentives do not motivate as well as
non-monetary incentives and monetary rewards have less lasting value. It has
been found that it would take double the money to make a reward as
worthwhile as any other incentive reward. 66% of executives believe that
travel and merchandise incentive programs are more memorable than those
using money; and 60% of executives believe that creating an incentive
program is easier with travel and merchandise incentives rather than
monetary incentives. Travel rewards work best when companies want to set
apart the incentive program from monetary compensation so that the reward
system does not become expected. There will be a greater impact on your
employees if the recognition value for your awards are high. Not only can
you offer travel incentives to your employees, but also to your top
customers. For example, group travel can be arranged for the first 50
customers to buy a new product or the top 20 repeat customers
How can I apply these different travel incentives?
There are many ways in which Travel Incentive Programs can be applied to
your company. Some of the suggested applications are:
Recognition of key employees
Sales incentives
Consumer appreciation
Customer promotions
Special prizes
Outstanding customer service
Hiring bonuses
Retirement gifts
